ESSAY 1

Nine years ago, my family and I moved to Chicago area from Mexico in search of a better life. The change was very hard for all of us, and the years that followed were full of hard work and dedication from my parents to see my younger siblings and me succeed. As hard as things were in the beginning, especially because of the language, I embraced this challenge thanks in part to my resilient personality, and part because of my strong family support system.

My fourth grade teacher had a strong impact on me, and I will always remember her words when she said to the class one day: “Your commitment to your schooling and your community will get you into college and a high paying job.” I kept this phrase etched in my mind to serve as my motivation for continuing to push forward.

I chose culinary arts because I love being in the kitchen and I want to please the palate of each person who tries my food. It brings me enormous pleasure every time that I work with the catering department at my school. I love to see the looks of satisfaction on people’s faces when they taste my food. Moreover, I love when my teacher uses me as an example in front of other students or wants me to serve at special events because they love the way that I prepare the food and my imagination when it comes to presenting the plates.

I’ve seen my father’s hard work for way too long. For years I wanted to help, but he told me the best help I could give him was to continue my education and never give up like he had done. My father worked two jobs to provide for my mom, brother and myself. He brought us to the United States to make sure we would be successful and it is up to me to do so. My dream is to become the first in my family to graduate from college. I want my parents as well as my little siblings to be proud of me and never regret the hard work they put in to see my dreams come true.

Winning the scholarship would help me achieve my dreams and set a great example for my younger brothers and sisters. It will also allow me to get one step closer to obtaining the skills I need to be a successful and able to give back to my family and my community.

Essay 2

My story begins on a typical spring Saturday afternoon as I had just finished my shift as a front desk operator at the Intercontinental Hotel located in the heart of downtown Chicago. I generally use my commute time as an opportunity to recap my day and reflect on both the challenges and accomplishments I encountered during my shift. It was about this time when my attention was grabbed by a prolific advertisement, which I heard on LA KALLE 106.7 FM that both resonated and struck a chord internally. I hoped this message would lead to the culmination of a heavy burden I had been carrying with me for many years.

Ever since I could recall from an early age, I have been enamored with the Hospitality industry. There lies a unique and special place in my heart that is triggered when individuals are brought together and bonds are forged through an encounter within the hospitality industry. My first glimpse into the fascinating world of the hospitality industry came from what at the time seemed like an unlikely source.

During the summer of 2006 I was fortunate enough to receive an internship at the Hostelling International Chicago. Throughout the course of this six-week journey I truly became indoctrinated to the wonderful world of the hospitality industry. This immersion into the hospitality industry was typified by a myriad experiences that allotted me a once in a lifetime opportunity to fully experience different facets of the industry which played a vital role in my personal and career development such as: interpersonal communication skills (front desk), sales skills (tour guide), trouble shooting/problem solving techniques (concierge). I feel that all of these intangible skills and knowledge that I acquired through my internship have armed my with the proper tools that in need to be both a champion in both life and business. My dreams would ultimately lead me to pursue a fulltime career in hospitality and study Hospitality and Tourism management at Roosevelt University.

It has been a long and tumultuous road that has been filled with many hurdles along the way. Financing my own education and supporting myself while working fulltime has ultimately made me wise beyond my years while providing my a strong sense of accomplishment and fulfillment which no one can take away from me. I have received many scraps and bruises by taking the road less traveled but I remain steadfastly committed to the manifestation of my life long dream into a reality.

I would like to leave you with some final words that have anchored as my motivation to continue in pursuit of my dream. During one of my courses we were lucky enough to have a guest lecturer who was the President of a top catering company in Chicago who forever etched the following motto in my mind.
