Colombia Vive Chicago is holding its third annual fundraising event on Thursday, June 16th, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Rumba, the classy Latin restaurant-bar on 351 W. Hubbard Street, Chicago. The fundraising event will have open bar and live music and dancing. Featured musicians include Diana Mosquera and her Group, Juvenato Vallenato y Cumbia, and The Queen of Vallenato, Monica Restrepo. Donation for the event is only $ 10 and tickets can be purchased at the door.
This year Colombia Vive Chicago hopes to raise $ 3,000 or more to enable the organization to continue supporting Mujeres de Alto de La Torre, a group of 27 women displaced by the Colombian long-lasting armed conflict. Colombia has one of the highest rates of forced internal displacement in the world. Approximately 4 million civilians have been forced to flee their homes by paramilitary squads, government security forces and guerrilla groups in the last 2 decades. Women comprise about 58% of the total displaced population this country. Colombia Vive Chicago is committed to help the group of Mujeres de Altos de la Torre, who have been forced to leave behind their homes, lands and livelihood and start anew in Medellín. For that purpose, it has donated more than $ 6,000 to support different projects undertaken by the women. Funds raised this year will go to the repair of their community center.
Colombia Vive Chicago is also celebrating 10 years of service to the community. Since its foundation in 2001 until 2004, the organization was devoted to provide quality information and support to Colombians seeking political asylum and refugee status in the Chicago area. Thanks to this effort, more than 200 Colombians were able to regularize their immigration status. In 2004, Colombia Vive Chicago turned its attention to the humanitarian tragedy caused by displacement in Colombia and started supporting the group of Mujeres de Alto de La Torre.
