For the first time ever, radio and television stations across the nation will participate in a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
“Residents should not be alarmed when they hear the test,” said Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy. “It’ll be the same test typically heard monthly on television and radio stations. The only difference is that all stations will be conducting the test at the same time.”
The test will be conducted for three minutes by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“According to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the test is an ambitious one but necessary to ensure the viability of the testing system,” said Fahy.
The EAS is a national public alert and warning system that enables the President of the United States to address all Americans during extreme emergencies. The system can provide alerts and warnings to radio and television stations, cable television, satellite radio and television services and wireline providers.
