Latina Wins YWCA Award

Each  year the YWCA of Elgin honors women who make a difference in the community.  Their Racial Justice Award is given to recognize a woman who demonstrates achievement and leadership in the field of Racial Justice and actively works toward the elimination of racism in any or all of its forms.  Last Thursday, May 9th the 2013 YWCA Racial Justice Award was presented to Attorney Kim Spagui of Elgin.  Spagui works at the Elgin based non-profit legal aid, Administer Justice which provides free legal, financial and conflict resolution services to low income families.  “Kim uses her talents as an attorney along with her strong interpersonal skills to bring peace in the midst of injustice.  She volunteers hundreds of hours beyond her work time because she believes in going the extra mile to serve the poor and vulnerable, “ according to Administer Justice Executive Director, Bruce Strom.  “Kim never sees her clients as “cases”;  she treats each individual with the dignity and respect they deserve,” according to Strom.

In 2012, Kim partnered with local agencies, government and not for profit groups to conduct 201 bilingual free legal education seminars.  She recently volunteered to serve as a role model, coach and advocate for Latina girls at South Elgin High School as part of their mock trial competition.  Kim is a member and former officer of the Elgin Hispanic Network, member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and the Lake County Bar Association-Legal Aid Committee.  She works with many of these groups to address institutional barriers to racial and economic justice.
