Beginning at 10:00 pm on Sunday, April 10, 2011, the City of Elgin Water Department will begin the annual hydrant flushing program. The flushing team will be out for three to four weeks Sunday through Thursday nights from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am.Water Department crews will be in City vehicles and will make attempts to have signs posted on a daily basis in the general area that is being flushed. They will move through the city in a planned order, making as little disturbance as possible, flushing hydrants and recording any problems found throughout the entire City of Elgin water distribution system.
The hydrants are flushed annually in the spring before the high demand period of summer. Hy-drant flushing is necessary to test the hydrants to make sure adequate flow and pressure is avail-able. Flushing is also done to remove sediment from the pipes in order to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution pipes.
